After growing up in Cody, Wyoming, Leach went to BYU and got a law degree from Pepperdine University. He didn’t play football, but he was fascinated by the passing offense used by Hall of Fame BYU coach LaVell Edwards.
He later worked as an offensive coordinator at Oklahoma and then served as head coach at Texas Tech for 10 years. During his tenure, his offenses were known as the Air Raid and he received national coach of the year honors for three seasons.

He was an excellent communicator and a master storyteller, a shrewd businessman and an engaging mentor. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
