Tossing and turning is a familiar sleep pattern for Gayle, who is feeling more jaded than well-rested these days. On her latest single “I Don’t Sleep as Well as I Used to,” the singer-songwriter details the realization that the promises she had been sold about the world as a child don’t actually line up with the reality she’s found herself living in.
“‘I don’t sleep as good as i used to’ is about losing your childlike magical thinking on the world,” the 19-year-old shared in a statement. “The realities of the world slowly seep into you until one day you look up and you notice the world isn’t running as perfectly as you once thought it was and maybe if you’re quiet you can even possibly feel the weight we all feel living the human experience.”
Throughout the song, Gayle zooms in on snapshots of the moments that pulled her head out of the clouds. She sings about being a product of divorce and the economy and rolling joints on bibles made for kids. She doesn’t find any escape in melatonin and wonders if it might be because of her high caffeine intake. Either way, she can’t sleep through the night. “I don’t get it, the world we live in,” she sings. “Keeps me up at night.”
Gayle first previewed the new single over the summer while opening for Pink on the Summer Carnival tour. Later this month, she will embark on her own headlining tour, titled Scared But Trying. She’ll be joined by Dylan on the 15-date tour.
